The podcast features Brittanii Lyons, and Jackie Jones as they provide a brief review and commentary on the book SlutWalk: Feminism, Activism, and Media by Kaitlynn Mendes. Throughout the book, Mendes breaks down the history of the SlutWalk, and evaluates its effectiveness. Mendes gives several examples of feminism as it relates to the movement.
The book itself proved an objective source of information about the movement. Throughout the book, Mendes cites many sources and outside journals to inform readers of the various opinions and research around the SlutWalk. In the podcast, Jones said that the plethora of resource information acted as almost an overload and overshadowed Mendes voice. Although her information helped build her case of objectivity, and brought an even amount of background information from both sides.
Throughout her dissection of feminism and media as it relates to the SlutWalk, Mendes provides an abundant amount of information about the SlutWalk, but also critiques the ongoing lack of intersectionality within feminism. My review on the book focused on this aspect of the narrative. Which was found in chapter three. By highlighting the issues often ignored in feminism and intersectionality, Mendes brought to the forefront the white privilege even in the SlutWalk movement.
Personally, I found it beneficial that Mendes included the “Open letter from Black Women to SlutWalk Organizers” and additional resources around the international SlutWalk movement. Showing how multicultural women react and participate in the SlutWalk was not only relatable, but informative for those who are not a part of that demographic. Due to my personal experiences, I can always find value in any narrative that bring forth the perspective of outlying cultures.
Overall, SlutWalk: Feminism, Activism, and Media serves as a great resource for learning about the movement and its history, but is a slow read for someone looking to read for leisure or pleasure.
